Going dairy free is becoming ever increasingly popular in North American society. Many people have found that unexplained symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, cramping and nausea can be accredited to intolerance for dairy. Doctors are even now recommending that colicky babies be tried on a lactose free diet to see if it improves their countenance.

A dairy free diet can sound intimidating, though. With so many favorite treats, from cheese to ice cream, made from dairy products, a life without lactose can sound like a daunting task. However, there are many new alternatives to dairy that make dairy free diets easier to swallow.

Health stores, and now many grocery stores, carry soy or almond products that can replace your favorite lactose-laden products. Enjoying your favorite foods without dairy may take a little effort, but if it can save you some of the painful symptoms of lactose intolerance, it's well worth the time.

Finding great lactose free recipes can be easy, but first you need to recognize all the hidden doses of dairy you get in a day! Of course, there are the obvious culprits of milk, yogurt, cheese, and other milk products, but dairy is also used in many food products on your grocers' shelves.

Boxed cereals, cereal and granola bars, breaded products like chicken nuggets and fish sticks, breads, crackers, deli meats, and energy bars all commonly contain dairy products, such as whey protein. These hidden dairy products can make it difficult to stick to lactose free recipes. However, as long as you're aware of the ingredients in any prepared or processed foods you purchase, you should be able to avoid excessive dairy in your diet.

Don't Deny Yourself with Dairy Free Diets

Dairy free diets don't have to be all about restrictions and denial. There are many great alternatives to dairy that can allow you the taste of your favorite foods and recipes without the pain of lactose intolerance. Using soy, rice or almond products is a great first step. Preparing your own dishes, using dairy substitutes, can also help you reduce the amount of lactose in your diet.

Drinking lots of water can also help you flush out any lactose or dairy products that you may inadvertently consume.
