Diabetes is a lifelong illness where you have too much glucose, otherwise known as blood sugar, in your bloodstream. A diabetic diet is one that helps keep your blood sugar level. Along with proper testing, you need to follow a diet that allows you to:

- Eat lots of whole grains, veggies and fruits
- Limit alcohol consumption
Diets for diabetics are one way doctors can reduce your reliance on medication, which carries its own risk. It is, however, far riskier to not take medication if you need it for your health. A better way to reduce your reliance is to set up a plan with your doctor to keep you healthy. Often a doctor will recommend you begin a gentle workout routine with your diet, so that they can work together with your medication to lower your blood sugar. Any diet for a diabetic will have this goal in mind.
A type 2 diabetes diet is similar to a diabetic diet, but the focus here is on fiber, to reduce the impact of sugar in your bloodstream. Limiting sweets and eating more fresh fruits and vegetables is also important. Type 2 isn't as severe, so you may be on a less restrictive diet as approved by your physician.
Diabetic diet foods can often be the foods you are already eating, but with some minor adjustments. Fruit can make a wonderful dessert, and steaming veggies without butter can really bring out the flavor of the vegetable without the added fat; heart disease is a factor for anyone with diabetes. You can even try the Mediterranean diet for a great way to lower fat and cholesterol. Be sure to check with your doctor before making changes to your diet in case any changes to your medication are needed.
