Specialized diets for medical conditions
While many people turn to diets in order to lose weight, others need specialized diets in order to control their medical conditions. Medical diets are prescribed by doctors in order to combat conditions that may prevent individuals from getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy. In fact, many medical diets help more than one condition because eating healthier has benefits for your entire body.
Types of Medical Diet Plans
Medical diet programs begin with a visit to your doctor, who will assess you and diagnose your condition. He or she may send you to a nutritionist or dietician, who will help you form meal plans that will meet your nutritional needs while also helping your medical condition.
Some illnesses that require medical diets include:
- Irritable bowel syndrome: An extremely painful condition involving diarrhea, cramping and constipation, IBS requires a diet high in fibre and low in fat in order to stop symptoms and leave the person more comfortable. Often, an irritable bowel diet is coupled with medication.
- Diabetes: While diabetics range from mild to extremely severe, a diabetic diet can help the body's symptoms and may preclude the use of insulin in mild diabetes cases.
- Candida: A candida diet, or one that is low in yeast, can help battle candida infections brought on by too many antibiotics or from coming in contact with the yeast organism.
- Medical weight loss diets: When someone is morbidly obese, doctors may prescribe a severe form of dieting in order to bring them back down to a healthier weight. This may or may not be coupled with measures such as bariatric surgery or liposuction.
- Cancer diets: These diets are made to nourish those who are experiencing cancer and its symptoms in order to help their bodies fight this extreme illness.
Never start a medical diet unless it's explicitly prescribed by your doctor. Some of these diets can be extremely harmful if they are followed by someone without the condition they are prescribed for. Be careful when starting any diet, and always contact a medical professional first.
