Some people use this diet as a detoxification diet to purge toxins from their body, and used for for a short time for this purpose, a liquid diet can be good. However, practicing a liquid diet for weight loss can cause the loss of important nutrients and does not address the underlying lifestyle changes needed to maintain the weight loss.

While this diet helps people lose weight quickly, partly because there are no solids or fat for the body to digest, it can also be harmful to only drink juice. A body needs a variety of foods in order to stay healthy, and not all of them can be found in a juice.
Clear liquids, such as chicken broth, are often prescribed for people who are ill in order to keep their hydration levels steady and give them some nutrients. A clear liquid diet can help you lose weight and detoxify quickly, but it is not a sustainable lifestyle change.
There are medically approved liquid diets, such as the Medifast liquid diet and Slimfast, that will help you lose weight. Essentially, these are meal replacement supplements containing the nutrients your body needs to stay nourished throughout the day. When practicing these diet programs, you will drink the meal replacement for two meals and then eat a sensible dinner that should contain a balanced diet of protein, carbs, fats, dairy, vegetables and fruit. Many people have lost a lot of weight on these diets, but unfortunately, as soon as they began to eat solid food again, they did tend to gain the weight right back.
Before attempting any diet, speak to your doctor first. You may have health conditions that may be aggravated by these diets or make these diets extremely dangerous for you. Losing weight is important, especially if you are morbidly obese, but practicing a healthy diet is a better idea than trying to practice a fad diet that may or may not be harmful.
